The end of another year is quickly approaching which always brings lists of the top moments, events, occurrences and such from the current year. I went through my catalog of images which I took in 2013 and in doing so picked fourteen images from around Denver, Colorado. The 14 images below are in chronological order during the course of the year.
Sunrise on the First Day of 2013 in Denver
A new year has begun and yesterday morning I took the opportunity to photograph the first sunrise of 2013 in Denver. Heading to a familiar location I set up my camera and waited in the chilly conditions. I was watching the weather the past couple of days and saw the weather which brought a light dusting of snow on Monday morning would move on and clearing would start overnight. This was exactly the case as the sun lit up the clouds for a couple of minutes during the first sunrise for the year over the skyline of Denver.
Winter Morning at City Park
It snowed in Denver on Sunday. This was the largest amount of snowfall which fell from one storm this season making for much excitement to finally receive a good snowfall in the metro area. As I normally do I grabbed my camera and headed out to photograph the snow as it fell on a Sunday morning. While I have some photographs of Washington Park and Sloans Lake in the snow, City Park is a park I have tried to capture in the past. Walking back to the area my car was parked I noticed the curve of the lake and trees in the elements which I thought would be the perfect opportunity to capture a winter scene in City Park to compliment the scenes from the other Denver parks.
Morning at Sloans Lake
This past weekend after a Saturday snowstorm I headed to Sloans Lake in Denver to photograph at sunrise. When I got to the lake in below freezing temperatures the steam was rising from the lake. Positioning myself for sunrise I wait to the morning light to pick up more of this steam with the City of Denver in the background from just west of downtown.
Building Reflection in the Snow
Yesterday a spring storm dropped some snow along the Front Range of Colorado. With the warm temperatures the past few days the accumulated snow did not amount to much but even so I grabbed my camera and headed out into the city. Walking near the Denver Art Museum I noticed the reflection of a building with the snow still on the granite bench for this image.
Denver from East High School
On a windy spring day I was able to head up to the clock tower of East High School, which is the oldest high school in Denver but not the oldest school building. The original East High School at 19th and Stout was demolished in 1925. The East High School building has a clock tower modeled after Independence Hall in Philadelphia. This tower sits 162 feet high and provides views of the Denver area from the location of the school near City Park. For this image I took some steps backs to include the lines and shadows entering the tower to provide a feel for the space in the building.
Snowy Walkway in Alamo Placita Park
More snow fell in Denver within the past week. Last Wednesday I headed out after sunset to photograph and found myself along Speer Blvd. and Cherry Creek. After photographing in this area I headed over to Alamo Placita Park and found a quiet park on a snowy evening. With the dusting of snow the downtown Denver area received from this latest storm I was careful to plan ahead on the way to a scene as with this path in the park. Looking back towards Speer the path and lights grabbed my attention on another snowy evening in April.
Snowy May Day 2013
It was five years ago today I first photographed this tree in Washington Park here in Denver. Just like five years ago it snowed today in Denver and this snow is giving us a little more than in 2008. This is indeed a new photograph of the tree as I headed to the park to photograph the tree as well as others areas in the park. The question is will this be the last snowfall of the season, at the current rate I would say most likely not.
Aircraft Departing over Plains
Earlier in the spring I was scouting the area around the airport and noticed an aircraft on final approach to Denver International Airport. Looking down the road I had noticed the contrast of the two fields ahead and now the plane overflying one of those fields which got me thinking. I headed back to this location to capture some departures on this day as the aircraft quickly climbed over the Colorado plains.
City Park Criterium
This past weekend was the City Park Criterium in Denver. For a good portion of the day races of varying levels took place around the park on either the long or short course with the races a set duration. You may recall last year I photographed at this event, however this year the long course in the park went past a scenic view of the boat house, city and mountains. Due to some late season snow there is still snow on the peaks of the higher mountains. As the cyclists went past I used a shutter speed to show the movement of these riders in the event as they passed the location.
Clear Creek Canyon Under Full Moon
Recently I have started photographing in the evening with the goal of building on the body of work which started with Aircraft Departing. A couple of weeks ago, I was looking down at Clear Creek Canyon just prior to sunset and noticed the visible road. Later that evening I visited the same location and captured the scene under a full moon with some of the twilight still apparent on the horizon. This is a 30 second image with the moon light allowing the detail of the mountains to show in the image.
As I continue to explore the metro area in the evening for a new body of work I went to the backside of Green Mountain one evening. As I crossed C-470 I noticed the traffic flowing in the darkness of the night. Looking down at the road with my headlamp on I found an opening in the fencing and positioned my camera for some longer exposures in the area. It was just past the new moon so it was quite dark in the area with an occasional mountain biker passing me from their evening ride on the mountain. After spending some time at the location I thought of some new ideas to photograph in the area and will be back in the upcoming weeks to try those ideas out with my camera.
Aircraft in the Night Sky
With the end of Daylight Saving Time this weekend this is a great time of year for evening photography. I headed out towards the airport area with my camera for Day 3 of Thirty Days 2013. When I first arrived the wind was blowing, when I left it was howling as a front prepares to head into Colorado. Just before heading out this evening I grabbed my fisheye lens which I haven’t used in a little while and wanted to see what I could come up with using this speciality lens. I parked under the arrivals for Denver International and decided to point the camera towards the fast moving clouds above me capturing this image with a thirty second exposure.
Afternoon at Sloans Lake
A nice sunny day in Colorado on Day 6 of Thirty Days 2013. Today I headed to Sloans Lake for some afternoon light. First stop was photographing the skyline across the lake with a steady breeze blowing. Prior to leaving the lake I checked out some other areas and found some tall grasses backlit blowing in the wind. Letting the sun wash out some of the scene I photographed these with a hint of the rocky mountains in the distance prior to the sun dropping behind the mountains to end another day in Denver.
Canopy at Union Station
A lot of change is happening around Union Station in Denver. On Day 19 of Thirty Days 2013 I headed that direction in the evening for some photography. A few mornings I have driven past the location of the new canopy over the platforms outside the train station and this was on my mind today as I looked around the area. From this perspective the repeating lines and the contrast against the dark sky drew my attention for the image today.
