Ten Images from 2017

December 31, 2017 By Neil

It was an interesting 2017 which had me in many locations.  While looking through my images for the year I decided to more so provide a glimpse of the different type of photography I did throughout the year as a recap to the images from 2017.

First Sunrise of 2017 in Juneau

Sunrise in Juneau 2017: It was a peaceful morning on the first day of 2017 in Juneau. I headed out to photograph sunrise which was a little before 9am. With some clouds in the southeastern sky it added some color over Sandy Beach and the old pumphouse.  Originally I was hoping to a higher tide to be there this morning, however the open beach works in this image for me as well as you see and imagine the history of Treadwell.

New Years Day Sunset in Juneau 2017

New Years Day Sunset in Juneau: This year I started out in Juneau, Alaska. I headed out to photograph sunrise and sunset which both brought plenty of color. For sunset I was at Auke Bay when I started to notice the color starting to appear in the sky. I found a good spot near Statter Harbor and watched the sunset for the evening. Plenty of people stopped by this location to capture the sunset using smart phones to large cameras.  Towards the bottom of the image you can see a little bit of a harbor seal which was enjoying swimming in front of us this evening as well.

Ice Above Mendenhall Lake

Ice Above Mendenhall Lake: Walking along the side of Mendenhall Lake on a winter day there were patterns in the ice which drew my attention. This image is the end of the ice with the lake below. The contrast of the light of the ice and the darkness of the lake was caught by the camera as a metered to allow this to happen.

Ceremonial Start of Iditarod 2017

Ceremonial Start of the Iditarod 2017: This was the second year I was in Anchorage during the ceremonial start of the Iditarod. The prior year I stayed closer to the starting line, thus in 2017 I headed down towards the first turn along the course. Finding a low spot I captured images of the mushers and their dogs making their way through the course to the thousands of fans along the course.

Gastineau Channel in Juneau

Gastineau Channel: From Sandy Beach you can look down Gastineau Channel. Over the years being in Juneau I have worked to capture this image of the fish drying rack with the peaks of snow further down the channel. It was on my final trip to Juneau where I was able to capture this

Clock Tower in Denver

Clock at D&F Tower: During Doors Open Denver I was able to go to the top of the D&F Tower in downtown Denver. It was a snowy day this year during the event so the view was restricted by the snowfall, however it allowed me to focus on some of the inner workings of the clock in the tower during the 30-40 minutes I was at the top of the building. With a clock face on four sides there are plenty of mechanical workings to capture.

Rookery Building in Chicago

Rookery Building: When in Chicago I had an opportunity to not only visit the Rookery Building but go to the top of the building itself. This allowed me to capture the stairs from the highest floor and look down at the repeating patterns.

Bay Area Sunset

Bay Area Sunset: On Day 21 of Thirty Days 2017 I was heading back across San Francisco Bay to Bay Farm Island as the sky started to light up during sunset. From the back of the ferry I watched as the sky changed color first across San Francisco and then across the peninsula as the ferry headed south.  This was a nice surprise after a day exploring the City and Angel Island.

Sunrise in Havana

Sunrise in Havana: While out photographing at sunrise in Havana, I turned around from the direction I was walking to notice the light poles leading up the palm trees during a colorful sunrise on my first day in the city.

Fisherman in Cuba

Fisherman in Cuba: Just outside of Havana I was at a fishing co-op. From a small foot bridge I was able to capture a fisherman capturing fish which would be used for bait while out fishing in the open seas.
